    The United Nations Foundation links the UN’s work with others around the world, mobilizing the energy and expertise of business and non-governmental organizations to help the UN tackle issues including climate change, global health, peace and security, women’s empowerment, poverty eradication, energy access, and U.S.-UN relations.

     

    Nothing But Nets is an innovative grassroots campaign that fights malaria, which claims the life of a child every two minutes. Our campaign goals are to raise funding to send life-saving bed nets to families and to advocate for malaria prevention programs like the President’s Malaria Initiative and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The Nothing But Nets Communications intern will assist the communication team in preparing for major moments this spring including our annual Leadership Summit in March and World Malaria Day in April.

     

    This is a part-time position, though the applicant ideally can work two full days a week (which days can be at his/her discretion, Mon/Wed or Tues/Thurs, as an example).

    Working Relationships

    The Communications Intern reports to the senior member of the Nothing But Nets’ Communications Team.

    Responsibilities

    • Support the campaign’s communications efforts to meet grassroots, advocacy, and fundraising strategies.
    • Assist the communications team in maintaining the campaign’s editorial calendar and brainstorming content for the campaign’s blog and Instagram.
    • Help write and edit campaign digital content, including blog posts, social media content, and other campaign materials.
    • Help design social media toolkits and graphics.
    • Monitor for and share news about malaria and Nothing But Nets, and help maintain the campaign’s media coverage archive.
    • Work with the communications team to research and identify key media contacts for appropriate campaign stories and events.
    • Help the campaign’s digital producer to pull data and analyze the campaign’s digital performance.
    • Help the campaign update materials and collateral with new messaging.
    • Work with the campaign to draft fact sheets, press releases, media advisories, refugee impact stories, and other communications materials.
    • Support the campaign’s digital producer in the promotion, measurement, and content of the new website.
    • Support campaign communications surrounding key celebrity ambassador trips and appearances.
    • Assist with campaign events.
    • Provide administrative support as needed.

    Selection Criteria

    • Intern must be enrolled in a degree-granting program during the internship or must be a recent graduate (within eight months of graduation) with a demonstrated interest in the UN and international development.
    • 15-20 hours per week is required for the internship.
    • Applicants should have an understanding of and experience with communications, journalism and/or public relations, social networking and blogging, and have their own presence on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, or Tumblr.
    • Background knowledge in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, International Studies, Global Health, or African Studies preferred.
    • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
    • Experience in Word, Excel, Outlook, Photoshop.
    • Ability to take initiative and be a self-starter.
    • Strong organizational skills.
    • Ability to manage multiple tasks.

    Other Information

    The United Nations Foundation offers unpaid semester-long full and part-time internships.The Communications Intern, Nothing But Nets should be able to start in January 2019.
